Concentrate on Today

They say that adversity builds character, and I know that is true in my own life, but I also recognize it in others when I see them. Folks that have gone through hell to get to where they're going seem to be more alive, with it, and have an air of wisdom about them.

Being a survivor

Not long ago, I was in Beverly Hills California and I met a Holocaust survivor. He was rescued by US forces, when they took over the concentration camp. He said he was lucky to be alive, and he thanked the United States for freeing him.

Take it day-by-day

Just the other day, I met an individual who had gone through some tough times in her life, and her father was in a prison camp in World War II for five years. He gave her some wisdom, which she had lived with her entire life. Her father told her that what kept him alive was taking each day, one at a time. And he explained in so many words; look at the bright side because whatever happens to you could have been much worse.

Sound wisdom

It seems to me that this advice is sound wisdom any time you are faced with adversity whether it is self-imposed or imposed by your adversaries. Indeed on thinking about this I related her story of her father to the many marathons I had run, and the long-distance interstate bike rides I had made.

Concentrate on the mile you are on

"You see, as a long distance runner and cyclist, I very much agree with her father, concentrate on "now" or the mile you are on, and "will" yourself to continue. Yes, looking at the bright side has its advantages, but I also realize that crisis = danger, but also opportunity! There is ALWAYS opportunity in chaos, you have to study the anomalies to find it."

I sincerely hope you will consider this next time you are down on your luck, or trying to make it through the storm of adversity. Her father had inspired her, just like the gentleman at the Beverly Hills coffee shop, the Holocaust survivor, had inspired me that day. Please consider all this.
