Western Astrology
The origin and meaning of zodiac signs

Astrology through the Ages

Western astrology and the zodiacThrough their observation of the skies across oceans of time ancient astronomers learned to predict the movement of the stars. Using this knowledge astrologers began to try and forecast earthly events which coincided with these movements.

They discovered that the date and time of a persons birth seemed to indicate what type of personality that individual would be and therefore their future. If you could determine astrology personalities then you could predict future events. Thus began the art and history of Western astrology.

Western Astrology

Western astrology is the system of astrology most popular in Europe and the United States. It is based primarily on the birthday of the predictee and the sun's and planets' positions in the ancient signs of the zodiac located along the ecliptic in equal, 30 degree sections (for a total of twelve signs) beginning at the Vernal Equinox on or around March 21st of each year.

Origins of Western Astrology

Western astrology originated in Mesopotamia during the 2nd millennium BC, from whence it spread to much of the world. Other systems of astrology were developed independently in China, in the Americas and elsewhere.

Premodern observers noticed that the annual patterns of the movement of the stars coincided with such events as the advent of springtime, changes in weather and the migration of birds every year.

Affects of the Stars

Without knowing why these phenomena occurred together, other events were said to be affected by the stars as well.

Astrology and Astronomy

In medieval Europe, important political and military decisions were often made in consultation with astrologers.

Today, believers in astrology use it primarily for making personal decisions, and astrology has become distinct from astronomy.
